Day 1, Charlton train station (Thames Barrier) to Richmond, 51km

Dec 11th, 2013

I took the Southeastern train from London Bridge to Charlton Station and walked from the station to the Thames Barrier, then continued along the Thames Path.

At the end of the day, I came off the Thames Path and walked to Richmond station where I caught the train back to London via Vauxhall.

It was a misty morning which made it a very atmospheric walk into London.

  1. Hi Kat,

How did you find the winter sunlight hours doing this walk? Did you do any of it during the dark or just stick to day light hours? Thinking of doing this in October.

I stumbled across your blog as I’ve been thinking about doing the PCT. So many inspiring walks! Definitely going to try out a few of the U.K ones before I commit fully to the idea of the PCT. Plus, I am new to hiking, although I do do a lot of walking around London when I can!

I’ll be sure to have a good read of all your posts and I’m sure I’ll have more questions for you 🙂

    Thanks

    • Hi Laura,

I walked it in December and set myself a challenge to walk it in 7 days (not recommended!) but this meant that I was walking in the dark for a couple of hours each morning and sometimes an hour in the evening. I usually started walking around 6am. October should be a little better with longer daylight hours and I don’t recommend walking in the dark because you miss the stunning scenery but it was really beautiful being on the river at sunrise to see it so still and atmospheric.
Hopefully you’ll be able to walk at a more relaxed pace because there’s some great villages and sights along the way.
I hope you have a great time and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions 🙂
