Day 105

Mile 1636 to Seiad Valley (mile 1653), 17 miles

Cost: camped at the Seiad Valley RV park, $15 incl shower, laundry & wifi

We got up at 6am and set off on the 17 mile downhill to Seiad Valley. I was quite concerned about how steep the downhill was going to be over such a long time (on my knees and ankle), but it was actually a terrific gradient and very soft path and I was able to make good time.

There were 2 bridges that had collapsed. One was a detour with stepping stones over a stream and the other was a long log.

There was a lot of poison oak the lower the elevation but I think I did ok to avoid it.

The last 7 miles to Seiad Valley was road walking but I’m fine with this.

Especially when you pass bramble bushes and get to eat as many as you can stomach! (Although I did have to pull quite a few thorns out of my fingers) 😦


We arrived in Seiad Valley by midday and went straight to the cafe for lunch. Seiad valley is the perfect hiker town: the post office, general store and cafe are all in the same building with the RV park/showers/laundry right next door… Very convenient!

Lunch at the cafe was delicious and we sat there until they closed at 2pm feeling sorry for all the hikers that arrived and saw their closed sign.

We had always planned to hike on today after picking up our resupply boxes, showering and doing a load of laundry… But the dryers weren’t working so we had to hang up our washing, then a storm rolled in and before we knew it (around 8pm) we were paying the $15 to camp the night! We would get up early and leave, tomorrow we have a massive climb up out of Seiad valley!
