I tried as hard as possible to sleep in and made it to 9am. I did well considering I first woke at 5am!
My whole body felt weak and I knew it was time to have a day off. I’m 2/3 of the distance now and it looks like I have about 400km to go. It’s also the first rest day since day 8 when I had a short 6km day.
I started going through my backpack trying to see if there was anything I could leave behind and noticed that all 3 pairs of socks had holes in them from the heel of my shoe rubbing them. I then decided to look at my shoes to see how the tread was holding up and got quite a shock to see how bad the tread had worn under my heels. There’s no chance of finding these same shoes in Japan in my size (Japanese women have tiny feet!) but I did need to find some new socks. After some research I found a camping store about 10km out of Matsuyama so I took the tram to the closest stop then walked the rest of the way and bought new smart wool merino socks… I’m hoping these will last 400km!
These were brand new!
I had a date with my masseuse from yesterday for another 1hr massage and it was just as painful as the day before! Then I was off to the Onsen for another long soak in the bath before a lovely big Japanese tonkatsu dinner washed down with Dogo Onsen Beer.
It was a nice relaxing day and I’m not sure I’m going to want to walk again tomorrow!
