The following list was produced by Zenkon no Kai and contributed to by locals and pilgrims. I was handed this list on an A3 sheet of paper in English from Temple 1.

‘Tsuyado’ = free temple accommodation
-
Henro huts = some with toilets/running water nearby (I saw one that had a shower hose inside and I stayed in one that had an electricty outlet!)

‘Zenkonyado’ = free or cheap accommodation offered to pilgrims from locals

‘Daishido’ = free temple style accommodation not attached to a temple and usually run by the community so you need to ask permission and get a key to enter
TEMPLE 1:
- Namaste Guesthouse, near Naruto whirlpool, ¥2000, meals provided as osettai. 090-7780-1273
- Ashram zenkonyado, near Naruto station, ¥2000, tea & coffee provided as osettai, kitchen available. 090-5717-9096
- Oshikoku guest house, in front of temple 1, bath/kitchen/internet/bicycle, ¥2000, 080-4034-4593
BETWEEN TEMPLE 5 & 6:
- Mizobuchi Koumuten (construction company), ¥300. Osettai provided.
TEMPLE 6:
- Anrakuji tsuyado. 2nd floor of temple gate, free but limited space to 3 or 4 pilgrims
BETWEEN TEMPLE 10 & 11:
- Kamonoyu onsen iyashinosha zenkonyado, (Kamonoyu bath house) 2km before temple 11, free to stay in the hut with toilet and washing machine. Bath house costs 300 yen. Free bicycle. (I STAYED HERE)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 11 & 12:
- Ryusui-an zenkonyado, along main road (route 12), just after Ryusui-an temple (not one of the 88)
- Karuizawa Leisure Land, small hut, ¥1500. (¥600 with your own tent). Bath available
TEMPLE 12:
- Shozanji tsuyado in a mikan (mandarin) orchard. 088-677-0112
- 3km after temple 12 – Iyashi dokoro sudachi-kan. Men and women in separate rooms. ¥3000 incl 2 meals and rice balls osettai for lunch. 088-677-1180 (I STAYED HERE)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 16 & 17:
- Sakae Taxi zenkonyado. 088-642-1391
BETWEEN TEMPLE 17 & 18:
- Shinmachi onsen (bath house) – can’t stay but free bath for walking pilgrims
- Hut with walls and windows after Katsuura bridge on route 55
BETWEEN TEMPLE 20 & 21:
- Can camp at school ruins after Kakurinji (temple 20). Also a hut a little further ahead.
BETWEEN TEMPLE 22 & 23:
- Zenkonyado kikuya kanamonoten, immediately after Byodoji (temple 22). Light work in exchange for accommodation
- Zenkonyado hashimoto (refurbished bus), 1 km before temple 23 on route 55
BETWEEN TEMPLE 23 & 24:
- Teba-jima guesthouse. Located on a small island (called teba-jima), 4km from Mugi port. Go by ferry. ¥2000. Donation for meals. No cars on the island. 090-7574-7879 (I STAYED HERE)
- Cafe Hikosen – after Shishikui beach and a bridge passing Shishikui port, has coffee and internet as osettai for pilgrims
- Tsuyado at Toyodaishi meitoku-ji in None, Toyo town.
- In Sakihama, various places to sleep out – bus stop, under the bridge
- Daishido near Sakihama port
TEMPLE 25:
- Bridge at beach just after temple 25. Running water available in park in front.
BETWEEN TEMPLE 27 & 28:
- Zenkonyado on a henro road near Nishibun station, Geisei village. Separate room for men & women
- Konan city Kagami henro hut, has water and blankets
BETWEEN TEMPLE 28 & 29:
- Zenkonyado Nishioka, 3km after Monobe river, ¥300
BETWEEN TEMPLE 29 & 30:
- Hut after Kamohara Post Office, has water and a toilet (I STAYED HERE)
TEMPLE 33:
- Tsuyado at temple 33
TEMPLE 34:
- Tanemaji (temple 34) tsuyado. Must get a stamp
TEMPLE 35:
- Kiyotakiji (temple 35) tsuyado (I STAYED HERE)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 35 & 36:
- Hut before Tsukajizaka tunnel, has running water and toilet
- Hut on the west side before Usa bridge, opposite the port
- Kokumin shukusha tosa, ¥2500 dormitory, has a hot spring
BETWEEN TEMPLE 36 & 37:
- Henro hut at Sasaki, has walls and a wood floor, running water and a power supply
TEMPLE 37:
- Iwamotoji (temple 37), there’s a hut at the back of the temple
BETWEEN TEMPLE 37 & 38:
- Kannonji (a temple not part of the 88 temples), after Ida tunnel in Kuroshio town. Has a bath house nearby
- Daishido at Takejima, near Kotsuka station, must wake up at 5am
- Hut at drive-in Suisha in Tosa-Shimizu city, has running water and a toilet
- Campground next to a school in Shimonokae
- Kutsurogi no Sato henro hut in Tsuro, ¥500. Additional ¥500 for dinner, ¥1000 for a room inside, bath available, 0880-82-7304
- Hut at michi-no-eki (services stop) in Sukumo, has running water and a toilet
BETWEEN TEMPLE 38 & 39:
- Nouka minshuku kazaguruma in Mihara town, ¥3000 for henro, has a bath, washing machine and fireplace
BETWEEN 39 &40:
- Roof near sports complex above Ipponmatsu onsen (bath house), has running water and a toilet
TEMPLE 40:
- Kanjizaiji temple (temple 40), tsuyado
BETWEEN TEMPLE 40 & 41:
- De-ai-21 at Ainan town office, can stay
- Campground at Sunokawa park with a hot spring nearby, toilets and running water (I STAYED HERE)
- Huts after Arashi post office
- Hut before Matsuo tunnel
- Hut at Ishimaru Park, between Lawson and Sunkus convenience stores, near Kitamura river, has toilet and running water
BETWEEN TEMPLE 42 & 43:
- Michibiki daishido, only one person can stay
TEMPLE 43:
- A park south of a river near Meisekiji (temple 43), can camp there
BETWEEN TEMPLE 43 & 44:
- Tsuyado at Toyogabashi temple (bangai temple #8), nice hut with tatami, blankets, electricity, toilets, running water and vending machines, close to restaurants (I STAYED HERE)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 44 & 45:
- Rest hut in front of Furuiwaya-sou, there’s a bath and coin laundry available in Furuiwaya-sou
TEMPLE 47:
- Yasakaji temple (temple 47) tsuyado, can borrow a bicycle (I STAYED HERE)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 47 & 48:
- Fudahajime daishido, ask for permission at the telephone given (assume it’s written on the daishido?), running water and toilet
- Hut at jou no fuchi park, running water and toilet
TEMPLE 51:
- Ishiteji temple (temple 51) tsuyado, can borrow a bicycle
- Fujiya guesthouse near Dogo Onsen, ¥2000, dormitory, 080-1750-5454
- Dogo Ai guesthouse in arcade near Dogo Onsen, ¥2000, dormitory with kitchen facilites and washing machine, 080-3166-7882 (I STAYED HERE)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 53 & 54:
- Asanami Daishido, behind a tatami shop, knock on their door after 5pm to get the key, toilet outback and running water out the front, one shop nearby, (I STAYED HERE)
- Aoki Jizou tsuyado
TEMPLE 58:
- Senyuji (temple 58) tsuyado, has a bath
BETWEEN TEMPLE 59 & 60:
- Koumyoji temple (temple not part of the 88), tsuyado, ¥2000, in Iyo Miyoshi, bath house nearby
- Hut near the entrance of the mountain trail to Yokomineji temple, has running water and toilet
TEMPLE 64:
- Maegamiji temple (temple 64), there’s a hut in the garage with a hot spring nearby
BETWEEN TEMPLE 64 & 65:
- Hagio-an zenkonyado near Hagio post office, run by Takahashi tatami shop, toilet, running water and electricity, shops nearby, the owner told me about the obento shop nearby that gives pilgrims an obento as osettai so this was my dinner, free (I STAYED HERE)
- Hut at Enmeiji temple in Doi, running water and toilet
- Hut 4km before Sankakuji (temple 65)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 65 & 66:
- Bus stop at Hirayama, has walls
- Minshuku Tabibito-yado, after Sakaime tunnel, make a phone call at Restaurant Suisha, ¥2500, 090-5275-1951
BETWEEN TEMPLE 66 & 67:
- Shirafuji Daishido, ask permission from Ando-san, on the trail after Shin-ike
BETWEEN TEMPLE 69 & 70:
- Can camp under the bridge just before Motoyamaji (temple 70)
BETWEEN TEMPLE 70 & 71:
- Hut at Iyadani onsen fureai park mino, has running water and a toilet
TEMPLE 75:
- Ask at Zentsuji (temple 75) for zenkonyado
BETWEEN TEMPLE 76 & 77:
- Horie park, behind the cemetary at the end of the street, go past the train crossing, west of Doryuji temple (temple 77), has running water and a toilet
TEMPLE 78:
- Utangura zenkonyado, 300m east from the gate of Goshoji temple (temple 78), ¥1000. Osettai for breakfast and rice balls for lunch, separate rooms for men and women, bath and laundry machine available, 0877-85-5172
BETWEEN TEMPLE 81 & 82:
- Hut with running water and a toilet
TEMPLE 84:
- Yashimaji temple (temple 84), there’s a hut behind the temple, nice view, running water and toilet
- Yashima Daiichi Kenko Land, west side of temple 84, near the port, ¥2575
BETWEEN TEMPLE 87 & 88:
- Hut in front of the Henro Cultural Exchange Salon, can get a ‘ohenro taishi’ certificate from the salon (open until 4pm), has running water and a toilet
TEMPLE 88:
- Hidamarimushi, old Japanese style guest house, ¥2000, dinner ¥1000, breakfast ¥500, 050-3433-8378
BETWEEN TEMPLE 88 & 1:
- Koyasan Ashram Zenkonyado, near Naruto station or highway bus stop of Naruto, can introduce walking pilgrims to osettai in Koyasan, ¥2000, 090-5717-9096

Super informative. Been on the bucket list since I left Japan. There in Oct. Sorry I found your page so late. Would have love to entertained you and yours on your way through Truckee on the PCT. Osettai paid forward. Happy Trails
