May 27th, 2013Wow, what a climb! I knew by looking at the elevation map that today was going to be hard but I guess I thought with all the kilometres my legs had already covered that they would find it a walk in the park… Not today! It was steep and my calves were burning. I walked with John from Ottawa, he’s been sketching his way across the camino and his sketches are terrific. (You can see his book of sketches from the camino here)
It was overcast and cold to begin with but it eventually turned into a lovely sunny day. The track was a mix of mountain paths, road, mud and rocks and I occasionally came across some large green and blue lizards sunning themselves in the sunshine. The last 8 km were a killer and all uphill but the views were worth every step and it felt like an achievement to finally arrive in O’Cebreiro, a very quaint mountain village 1300m up a hill. I had now arrived in the region of Galicia, which I was told had rain every day of the year!
I had a wonderful dinner in a rustic restaurant with many camino friends and I once again felt so incredibly grateful to be living this experience.
